How to Calculate Concrete Volume
Concrete is measured in cubic metres (m³).
To calculate the volume required, use this formula:
Length (m) × Width (m) × Depth (m) = Cubic Metres (m³)
Example Calculation
If your slab measures:
- Length: 5 metres
- Width: 3 metres
- Depth: 0.15 metres (150mm)
The calculation would be:
5 × 3 × 0.15 = 2.25m³
This means you would require approximately 2.25 cubic metres of concrete.
Concrete Calculator for Common Projects
Concrete Slabs
For patios, shed bases or garage floors:
- Measure the length in metres
- Measure the width in metres
- Decide the slab thickness (typically 100mm–150mm for domestic projects)
- Multiply length × width × depth
Concrete Foundations & Footings
For trench foundations:
- Measure total trench length
- Measure trench width
- Measure trench depth
- Multiply length × width × depth
Foundation depths and widths vary depending on building regulations and soil conditions.
Concrete for Driveways
Domestic driveways are typically:
- 100mm thick for light vehicles
- 150mm+ thick for heavier loads
Always ensure you factor in the correct depth before calculating.
Don’t Forget to Allow for Extra
It is common practice to allow a small margin (around 5–10%) to account for:
- Uneven ground
- Spillage
- Minor measurement discrepancies
Ordering slightly more helps prevent project delays caused by running short.
If you’re unsure how much to allow, we can advise you.
Concrete Volume Conversion Guide
If your measurements are in millimetres:
- 100mm = 0.1m
- 150mm = 0.15m
- 200mm = 0.2m
Simply convert all measurements into metres before calculating.

Concrete Calculation FAQ’s
One cubic metre equals 1,000 litres of concrete.
Typically 100mm–150mm depending on vehicle weight and usage.
Yes — provide your trench dimensions and we will calculate the volume required.
A small allowance (5–10%) is often recommended to avoid running short, you will only pay for the concrete poured.
